FAQS
WHAT SHOULD MY CHILD WEARÂ DURING THE WINTER MONTHS TO KEEP WARM & DRY?
Boots
Bogs boots, since the neoprene material ensures that little feet stay warm no matter what. Another important consideration for keeping feet warm is that the boots must fit loosely.
Jackets
Columbia brand Omnitech or Bugaboo that have a removable fleece lining. The jackets should be loose fitting so as not to compress the body's own insulating layer of warmth that surrounds the skin.
Rain Pants & Underlayers
Against the skin, the child must be wearing a base layer of thin silk or wool long underwear. Next, the child should have on a middle layer of slightly thicker silk or wool leggings. Finally, a heavy weight layer of fleece leggings should be worn over the base & middle layers. Rain paints are a crucial role for most of the year at Meriwether Homestead Nature School for protection against the wet ground & for additional insulation. It's crucial that the rain pants have a closure such as Velcro, at the ankle so the pants cinch tightly over the boots to keep water out. We highly recommend Oakiwear, Lands End, or REI rain pants.
Mittens
We insit that parents provide long Gordini or Outdoor Research brands of waterproof mittens in the "sleeping bag" style, which means that they unzip from wrist to finger tip, adequately covering the child's wrist.
